The Whirlpool Game

Did you ever play the whirlpool game?

When I was a kid, anytime a group of us got into an above ground swimming pool, we would get a current moving by swimming around the edge of the pool in the same direction. We're not talking one or two laps; we'd keep at it to the point of exhaustion.

And the current would get stronger and stronger, finally stronger than our efforts.

Strong enough to keep flowing in spite of our flopping and flailing and laughing our heads off.

Strong enough to lift us off our feet.

Then we'd let go and let it carry us with it.

The wonderful thing about childhood is this commitment to JOY, the innate awareness that joy is worth the effort.

When we grow up, we lose all that. We funnel so much energy into our “must dos,” we don’t have anything left for the “why nots.”

What if we considered JOY a commitment, like the whirlpool game, that requires effort at first but carries us in the end?

Each time we consciously choose to let joy in –an enriching class, a lunchtime walk, a solo dance party or mindful meditation – it’s a lap around the pool.

Making time and space for joy takes effort at first, but the more we move in that direction, the stronger the current becomes. And sooner or later, JOY is not just a current to cultivate, but the water we’re swimming in.

At Prasada, we’re committed to providing opportunities for you to strengthen that current and move in the direction of joy. We can’t wait to see you in class.

Be Well,
